Will County Jail Capacity
The jail-capacity record has two useful strands. The sheriff’s Adult Detention Facility page says the jail opened in March 1989, expanded in May 2009, grew from 156,000 to 318,000 square feet, added ten housing units, and increased capacity from 322 to more than 1,000. The 2024 IDOC inspection gives a narrower compliance history: the jail opened with a maximum capacity of 300, the 2009 addition expanded maximum capacity to 909, and the monitoring capacity in use for 2024 was 424.
That difference should not be flattened. The sheriff page describes the building and expansion in broad public terms. IDOC describes the facility for jail-standards monitoring. The 2024 report also listed 18 housing units, a medical unit, special housing, dorm housing, booking cells, triage rooms, mass observation rooms, and no juvenile detention. It found ACA accreditation through 2025, but it also noted one non-compliance finding on supervisory checks and recommended continued attention to washroom conditions.
