Will County Adult Detention Overview

The Will County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Facility page describes the jail as the county detention center for adults awaiting trial and for people serving criminal sentences of up to one year. The jail is operated by Sheriff Mike Kelley's office, not by the Illinois Department of Corrections. That split matters for lookup work. A person booked after a Joliet, Romeoville, Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Illinois State Police, or sheriff arrest may appear in the Will County Inmate Inquiry. A person already sentenced to state prison will usually move to IDOC records instead.

The ADF opened in March 1989 and was later expanded. The sheriff's page says the original building grew from 156,000 square feet to 318,000 square feet after a 2009 expansion that added ten housing units and raised capacity from 322 to more than 1,000. The 2024 IDOC jail monitoring report gives a more precise compliance history: original maximum capacity 300, expanded maximum capacity 909, and monitoring capacity in use 424. Both statements can be true in context, because one is a broad local expansion description and the other is a jail-standards monitoring figure.

Will County ADF Roster Lookup

Use the Will County Inmate Inquiry for ADF custody and booking history. The roster is broader than a current jail count. When inspected on June 10, 2026, the unfiltered search returned more than 13,400 public booking-history records, while the in-custody filter returned 513 records. For a current custody check, select the In Custody box and review the release date on the booking profile. If the jail record has not appeared yet, call the ADF or use the sheriff records process for records not visible online.

Will County ADF Address

The Adult Detention Facility sits in downtown Joliet near the courthouse and the video visitation building. Jail administration and custody questions go to the ADF. Visitor check-in for routine inmate visits goes across the street to the video center, so do not use the jail address as the visitation reporting point unless staff direct it.

Will County Booking and Intake

Booking at the Will County Adult Detention Facility begins after arrest, court remand, or transfer from another agency. IDOC's 2024 monitoring report says admission procedures include legal custody checks, identification, search, fingerprints, x-ray screening, property inventory, and booking triage by a nurse. Property is placed into blue and yellow netted bags and sent by overhead conveyor to storage. Currency is put into a money manager machine for the person's commissary account.

New detainees receive access to five free phone calls, a shower, jail clothing, bedding, towels, orientation, and a handbook. Classification uses Northpointe software, with reviews at least every 60 days or after each court date. Classification is the jail's internal risk and housing review. The public roster may list a broad housing facility, but it does not publish a pod or cell. First court appearance and release conditions are controlled by the court, so a zero bond field or blank bond table is not a promise of release.

Will County Jail Visitation

The ADF uses video visitation for routine personal visits. The sheriff visitation information page directs visitors to schedule by phone and report to the Will County Video Visitation Center at 20 S. Chicago Street. Visits are first come, first served. Scheduling must be 24 to 48 hours ahead, and no visit may be scheduled more than 48 hours in advance. Most ADF inmates may receive two 30-minute visits each week after the first court appearance.

The visitation center requires a valid government photo ID showing date of birth and current address. Recognized IDs include a driver's license, state ID, FOID card, military ID, passport, or green Matricula Consular ID. Visitors must arrive 15 minutes early, be properly dressed, and may be restricted if they fail to cancel a scheduled visit. A visitor who was incarcerated at WCADF within the last 30 days cannot visit.

Will County ADF Mail and Money

Will County ADF mail does not go to the jail street address. The sheriff's family and mail pages route personal mail through Smart Communications in Seminole, Florida. Inmates may send and receive USPS mail, but incoming mail is opened and searched. Letters cannot be dropped at reception. Books and periodicals must come directly from a legitimate distributor, publisher, or subscription service, and hardcover books, newspapers, local newspaper articles, stickers, tape, glue, glitter, perfume, cash, blank paper, envelopes, and stamps are among the listed prohibited items.

The sheriff family and friends page also lists bond, mail, and commissary paths. Money orders may be mailed if payable to W.C.A.D.F. - followed by the inmate's name. Cash deposits are accepted at the Video Visitation Center during daytime hours and at the Bond Lobby around the clock. The sheriff bail and commissary page links JailATM for online deposits and warns that the Sheriff's Office will not ask for bail by Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle.

Will County ADF Programs

The sheriff describes the Adult Detention Facility as a detention facility, but it still offers programs through the Center for Correctional Concerns. CCC provides social service help, educational programs, substance-abuse programming, a recreational library, religious services, weekly worship, Bible studies, chaplain access, and counseling or advocacy. The sheriff page says GED programming has produced more than 1,800 completions over more than 40 years. IDOC's 2024 report adds veteran outreach, reading materials, GED, ESL, religious services, and substance-use classes.

Oversight details help explain the facility beyond the roster. IDOC's 2024 Will County monitoring found ACA accreditation through 2025 and noted a medical and mental-health contract with Wellpath through September 2024. It also listed a Smart Communications tablet contract through 2025 and a Stellar Services commissary contract through September 2024. One non-compliance item concerned supervisory checks under Illinois jail standards, with recommendations to improve timely observations and continue washroom wall, mold, mildew, and standing-water work.
