Stateville Correctional Center Overview

The official IDOC Stateville Correctional Center page lists Stateville as a maximum-security adult male state prison at the Joliet address shared with related Stateville complex facilities. It opened in March 1925 and serves as the parent institution for Northern Reception and Classification Center and Stateville Minimum Security Unit. IDOC describes a 2,264-acre site, a 33-foot wall, guard towers, a 32-bed infirmary, and living units for general population, segregation, protective custody, and temporary writ individuals.

Stateville should not be described as the Will County jail. The county jail is the Will County Adult Detention Facility, which handles pretrial detainees, court holds, and county sentences up to one year. Stateville is part of IDOC. Its records concern state prisoners and IDOC status. A Will County conviction may appear on an IDOC profile after transfer, but certified court filings and docket activity still come from the Will County Circuit Clerk rather than from Stateville.

Stateville Capacity and Population

IDOC's Stateville page lists operational capacity of 3,020. The research notes caution that IDOC defines operational capacity as the maximum number of beds including health care, crisis, restricted housing, protective custody, isolation, reception/classification, and future beds down for repair, with data tied to an August 2022 bed-space capacity census. That figure is not the same as a daily population count.

The same IDOC page lists Stateville population 422, NRC population 1,312, Stateville MSU population 146, and total population 568 as of June 30, 2024. The total population line can appear confusing because it is not a simple sum of all complex numbers. The safest treatment is to preserve IDOC's wording and avoid recalculating. Official RISE IDOC materials also describe transfers by September 30, 2024 and rebuilding plans, which means any Stateville custody statement should be checked against current IDOC placement data.

Stateville IDOC Visitation

IDOC visitation is not the same as Will County jail visitation. State prison visits require IDOC approval and scheduling. Adult visitors need two IDs, including one state-issued photo ID. Stateville Rebuild Status Caveat

Stateville requires more caution than a normal facility listing. IDOC's public facility page remains live and contains address, phone, capacity, population, program, and visitation information. At the same time, RISE IDOC materials describe transfers from Stateville by September 30, 2024, except for people in the healthcare unit, plus planning for rebuild work. A current searcher should treat the page as an official facility record and then verify actual placement with the IDOC locator and current IDOC notices.

This caveat also protects against the common Will County search error. Someone may search a county jail roster for a person who was already sentenced and moved to IDOC, or search IDOC for a person who is still in ADF pretrial custody. Use the legal stage first: arrest and pretrial custody usually means Will County jail records; sentence and prison transfer means IDOC; federal custody means BOP or USMS channels; immigration detention means ICE ODLS.
